The Department of Urology is well recognized for its particular expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of urological cancers, including prostate cancer. It offers screening, prevention, research and treatment programs in prostate cancer, and also manages patients with bladder cancer, kidney cancer and testicular and penile cancers. In addition, the Department serves as the McGill Reference Centre for complications related to prostate cancer treatment, which include sexual dysfunction and urinary incontinence.

The Department currently provides five to eight multidisciplinary oncology clinics staffed by nurses, radiation oncologists and urologists, and also offers the largest and oldest bilingual “prostate cancer support group” in Montreal. A clinical nurse, psychotherapist and sex therapist run this group, with urologists used as consultants. Current clinical research conducted by the Department includes multi-centre projects dealing with prostate cancer prevention and diet and new combination therapy.

The mission of the Uro-Oncology clinic is to assure the best quality of care in prevention, diagnostic and treatment of urological cancers. This is possible due to the latest technologies in treatments and a dedicated inter-disciplinary care team.

Since December 2007, the Department of Urology has offered to its patients a minimally invasive option for prostatectomy and nephrectomy with the assistance of the da Vinci robotic platform. For prostatectomy the precision of this system spares nerves and the sphincter and aids in more accurate and safer surgery. The urological surgeons sit at a remote computer console in the operating room where they control small instruments that access a patient's prostate or kidney. Benefits for patients include smaller incisions and a faster recovery time compared to conventional prostate and kidney cancer surgery.
