Overview

Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery refers to the branch of medicine that is concerned with both the medical and surgical treatment of the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) area, and with cancers involving the Head and Neck region. The JGH Otolaryngology Department receives numerous tertiary (specialty) and quaternary ultra-specialized referrals from across the province.

Each year, a large number of patients are treated in the department’s out-patient clinics, while numerous specialty surgical procedures are performed, including skull-based operations, hearing reconstruction, endoscopic sinus surgery, laryngeal-micro surgery, laser surgery and head and neck oncology operations, including thyroid and para-thyroid surgery.

Academically, the department receives a full rotation of residents, as well as numerous medical students from a variety of Canadian and American universities.

Doctors from international centres have trained in the department in a variety of sub-specialty areas. The research area consists of balance, deafness, head and neck oncology, micro-biology and genetics, and electro-magnetic interference.
