The science of dosimetry plays a very important role in the treatment of cancer. It is a scientific subspecialty in the fields of health physics and medical physics that is focused on the calculation of internal and external doses from ionizing radiation.

Medical dosimetrists carefully calculate the dose of radiation prescribed by a radiation oncologist to make sure tumor sites get the prescribed dosage. Using their knowledge of physics, anatomy and radiobiology, they develop treatment plans and design optimal treatments that apply an effective dose to the targeted area while sparing normal tissue that surrounds it.
