Editing for readability of patient materials service

The target reading level for patient materials is grade 6-8. There are several tools you can use to imporve the readability of your documents. The JGH Patient Education Network has developed a guide that provides tips on how to write for patients and also explains how to use the Flesch-Kincaid tool in Microsoft Word (only for English documents). The  Clear language and Design (CLAD) Reading effectiveness tool is more sophisticated and can be used for documents written in French.

You can schedule an instruction session on how to write/edit for readability. The session is free.

You can also request that your document be edited for you. The fee is $10/page.

Please send us an email with your document(s) and fund no. and we will respond as soon as we are able (usually within 3 working days) or call at ext.22453.
