Palliative Care Program

The palliative care service of the JGH is a consultation service ran by family physicians from the Herzl and the CLSC, to assist oncology patients with pain and symptom control in the context of incurable disease. It is a multidisciplinary care team in which residents become an integral part of, some time during their training. The resident will respond to consultation requests from other services in the hospital, provide home care services and directly care for terminally ill patients admitted onto the Family Medicine Ward and the Palliative Care Unit. This is a unique experience enabling residents to learn more about pain and other symptom management as well as exposing them to dealing with psychological, ethical and social issues related to end of life care for both patients and their families. A 6 month fellowship program is also available for those interested, after completion of the two-year family medicine residency.
