The emergency room is often the gateway to psychiatric services, both inpatient and outpatient. It is, therefore often the first contact a patient may have with a psychiatrist or even the first time a patient has an opportunity to tell his or her story and to be heard. Here is where we can not only screen or assess a patient's condition, but to begin a therapeutic process that may continue as an inpatient, outpatient or in the community. Important aspects of emergency psychiatry include collaboration with other emergency medical staff as well as community resources and families of patients.
