Goal / Purpose of the Clinic

The primary purpose of the clinic is to provide specialized, structured care to improve overall outcomes and decrease the healthcare burden (specifically ER visits) for patients with pericardial diseases.

The clinic manages a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Acute and chronic pericarditis
  • Recurrent and refractory pericarditis
  • Myopericarditis and constrictive pericarditis
  • Chronic pericardial effusions

Diagnostic Testing

Our assessment protocols include:

  • Clinical Assessment: Comprehensive history taking and cardiovascular physical examinations.
  • Lab Work: Routine screening including CBC, CRP (inflammatory markers), troponins, liver/kidney function, and screening for specific etiologies (viral, autoimmune, etc.).
  • Cardiac Imaging: We utilize Echocardiography, and advanced imaging such as Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) and Cardiac CT when indicated.

Follow-ups

  • Structure: This is a nurse-led clinic under cardiologist supervision.
  • Frequency: Follow-ups are determined by disease stability. Patients on active treatment (e.g., corticosteroids or interleukin-1 antagonists) are typically seen monthly. Stable patients tapering off medication are seen every 3 months.
  • Urgency: Rapid re-evaluation is available for disease flare-ups to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations.

Patient Resources

  • Education: Patients receive education on disease management, specifically regarding medication tapering protocols and advice on strategy/treatment in case of recurrences.
  • Access: Patients have access to a direct contact number/email for the specialized nurse to report symptom recurrence or new issues, allowing for rapid intervention or telemedicine triage.
