CETAC: An invaluable resource that serves patients all across the JGH
The JGH’s Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Care (CETAC) is a leader in patient care, teaching and research on preventing and treating venous thrombosis and anticoagulation management at the JGH, and across the healthcare system in Quebec.
CETAC is a group of doctors and healthcare professionals specializing in care related to the prevention and treatment of thrombosis (blood clotting disorder) and the management of anticoagulation (blood thinners). Our team consists of doctors, pharmacists, secretarial and administrative support staff, and research staff. We work together as an interdisciplinary team that includes many highly trained health professionals, with the overall goal of excellence in thrombosis and anticoagulation care.
CETAC’s pharmacists run an Anticoagulation Stewardship Program to ensure that in-patients and out-patients are on the right drug and dose of blood-thinning medication. Fellows (trainees) from Quebec and around the world come to CETAC to do their thrombosis training to become future expert physicians in the field. Additionally, as one of only three centers in Canada, via the Department of Medicine at McGill University, CETAC offers An Area of Focused Competencies (AFC) Diploma in Adult Thrombosis Medicine. CETAC truly serves as an incubator of innovation in thrombosis clinical care and research.
Our Clinics and Patient Services
CETAC offers clinics and other patient services for the management of all aspects related to thrombosis (blood clots) and anticoagulation (blood thinners).
The Thrombosis Clinic provides care to patients who have been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism (PE), as well as other types of blood clots and those that may have an elevated risk of blood clots. Typically, the Thrombosis Clinic doctor will follow you and discuss why you may have developed a blood clot and make recommendations about how long you will be treated for and what types of measures to take to prevent future blood clots.
The Anticoagulation Clinic, sometimes referred to as “Warfarin (Coumadin) Clinic”, provides on-site monitoring, dose adjustment, risk assessment, and follow-up to patients taking warfarin (Coumadin).
Patients going for surgery or other invasive procedures will have dedicated one-on-one time with their doctor to go through step-by-step instructions on how to stop and restart their blood thinner before and after surgery.
Additionally, for hospitalized patients or patients coming to the Emergency Department or Clinique D’Acceuil diagnosed with blood clots, taking blood thinners or at risk of blood clots, our doctors provide consultation services to ensure optimal care as well as post-discharge follow-up.
CETAC Research
CETAC has an active research program run by world-renowned researchers with experienced research assistants in the field of Thrombosis and Anticoagulation. Patients who are eligible and provide consent can actively participate in our research studies and potentially benefit from cutting edge, novel treatments that are developed within this program.
Why participate in research? Research is an important part of what we do in CETAC to ensure the advancement of treatments for patients. There are many positive reasons to participate in research but there are no obligations to do so. When participating in a research study, you will be closely cared for by a team of experts familiar with the most cutting-edge treatments. Many research participants report that they derive satisfaction in knowing they are helping to advance medical care by contributing to new knowledge. Many find that they gain more knowledge about their own condition and potentially benefit from treatment not yet available to other patients.
