Dr. Paris was born in New York City, but has spent most of his life in Canada. He obtained an MD from McGill University in 1964, where he also trained in psychiatry. Dr. Paris has been a member of McGill's Psychiatry Department since 1972. Since 1994, he has been a full Professor, and he served as Department Chair from 1997 to 2007. Dr. Paris is currently a Research Associate at the Jewish General Hospital. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry.

Research Interests

Dr. Paris is a psychiatrist whose main focus of research is personality disorders. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) affects 1% of the population, and is associated with repeated suicide attempts and self-harm. Dr Paris’ research program aims to learn more about its causes, how it develops during childhood and adolescence, and how patients recover over time. Dr Paris collaborates with numerous researchers, and is a co-investigator on the following projects: 1) a community study of precursors of antisocial personality disorder; 2) a study of BPD in mothers under youth protection; 3) a comparison of impulsivity in BPD and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder; 4) a study of affective instability in BPD and mood disorders.
