The Hebrew Maternity Hospital of Montreal opened in November of 1916. It was realized in large part by the efforts of Mrs. Taube Kaplan, the poor wife of a Rabbi, who made it her mission to create Hospital facilities for Montreal's jews. She was keenly aware of the plight of Jewish women and the poor state of obstetrics facilities in Montreal. Through door to door campaigning she managed to raise $7000, which was enough to make the first payment on a house on Cadieux Street, where the hospital opened.
The Hebrew Maternity Hospital quickly outgrew these facilities, and it suffered from a chronic shortage of rooms and funds. By the mid-1920s the hospital treated an average of 400 patients (women and infants) a year. The lack of resources forced the hospital to close its doors in 1929. Its liquid assets amounting to some $40,000 was contributed to the capital campaign for founding the Jewish General Hospital which was launched in the same year. When the hospital came into operation in 1934, the maternity services were then incorporated into its facilities.
