The Montreal Clinical Society was founded in spring of 1923 by Dr. Nathan Freedman and Dr. S. Ortenberg. It was created because Jewish physicians had difficulty finding staff positions at the two major hospitals in Montreal due to anti-semitism.
The Society had three goals:
1. That a Jewish General Hospital be built in Montreal
2. That the medical knowledge of the members be strengthened by the presentation of papers, discussions etc.
3. That the medical ethics of the members be kept high.

The Society played a large role in the establishment of the Jewish General Hospital in 1934. It continued its activities until 1963 hosting the Louis Gross Memorial Lecture Series.
