Henri Elbaz started his carrer with a M.A. in Business Administration. He became Director of Research, Statistics and Public Relations at the Montreal Stock Exchange. He also taught Corporate Planning and Management Policy at the University of Montreal’s École des hautes études commerciales. He began his career at the Jewish General Hospital in 1976 as Director of Administrative Services. He became Executive Director in 1992.Under his care, JGH grew and improved both its expertise (oncology, neonatology, geriatrics, obstetrics/gynecology and emergency medicine) and its services to patients, especially immigrants, a diverse and vulnerable community located in the hospital area. Mr. Elbaz oversaw many construction and renovation projects: the full renovation and modernization of the Emergency Department; the acquisition by the JHG of the neighbouring convent of Les Soeurs de Sainte Croix that permitted the development of Pavilion H and the proposal to build Pavilion K; the addition of eight new floors atop Cummings Pavilion E, home to the Segal Cancer Centre that opened in 2006; and the start of construction in 2007 to significantly expand Radiation Oncology. Other notable achievements include the development of a JGH-based McGill Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology Program; major upgrades in the Divisions of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Oncology, including acquisition of a PET/CT scanner; and the opening of Quebec's first specially designated and fully equipped operating room for minimally invasive surgery. He retired from his position in 2008 although he has served in a volunteer capacity as a valued advisor to the JGH. Mr. Elbaz has also served on several commissions of the Regional Health Council, as well as the Association of Canadian Teaching Hospitals. Henri Elbaz leadership, talent and engagement were recognized by many awards. In 2002, his professional peers named him Manager of the Year in health-care delivery. He has merited the hospital’s highest honour in 2009 the Distinguished Service Award.

The Henri Elbaz fonds contains 5 series. The first series contains administrative records (PF12.1) showing his managerial position. This series contains four sub-series according to the nature of the records: Board Minutes (PF12.1-1), Annual Reports (PF12.1-2), Proceedings of Conferences (PF12.1-3) and the 10 audio cassettes about Strategic Planning (PF12.1-4). The second series contains documents demonstrating Henri Elbaz’s deep interest in architecture and space use in relation to the many construction projects he launched during his term as the hospital’s Chief Executive Director between 1992 and 2008 (PF12.2). The third series (PF12.3) contains documents that underline Mr. Elbaz cares for the history of the Jewish General Hospital and the community it serves. The fourth series (PF12.4) relates to the scientific activities conducted by the JGH during Henri Elbaz executive mandate. Finally, the last series (PF12.5) contains government records.

The administrative records are the main content of the PF12. This series comprises 4 sub-series based on the nature of the documentation. The board minutes (PF12.1-1) of various committees are the main content of the subseries. The following committees are represented: Building Committee (PF12.1-1.1), Executive Committee (PF12.1-1.2), House and Purchasing Committee (PF12.1-1.3), Management Committee (PF12.1-1.4), Patient Care Committee (PF12.1-1.5) and President’s Advisory Committee (PAC) (PF12.1-1.6). The second subseries (PF12.1-2) contains two annual reports, one for 1959 and one for 1991-1992. The third subseries (PF12.1-3) includes proceeding of three conferences which were held at the Palomino Lodge in 1967, in Mirabel in 1981, and in Esterel in 1986 respectively. Finally, administrative records contain the 10 audio cassettes relating to strategic planning (PF12.1-4).
