"Dear dear Gloria’s Girls,

What a sad moment for all of us. Words truly would not make justice to adequately express what Maxine, Gloria’s Girls, Gloria, the family, mean to us …. but for us it will be a moment of silence, to celebrate their lives and all of your commitments and achievements, that are helping so many women and their families.

In memory, in respect, in love,
The Gyn Oncology Team"

Robot-Assisted Surgery

The Division of Gyn-Onc at the JGH was the first to fully implement robot assisted surgery for gynecologic cancers in Canada in Dec. 2007. Since then, the staff physicians in gynecologic oncology have performed over 500 surgeries with the use of this novel technology resulting in a faster and less painful recovery for patients. This new web section represents a platform to share our knowledge and experience with robot assisted surgery. It contains a summary of the procedure in layman’s terms, patient experience, past press releases, patient education materials developed in-house, as well as the team’s academic activities in this field. We hope this website will provide a general overview and some insights into the utilization of this surgical technology in the best interest of the population of patients we serve.

Latest Research Findings by the Gyn-Onc Team

Intravenous aflibercept for treatment of recurrent symptomatic malignant ascites in patients with advanced ovarian cancer: a phase 2, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The Lancet Oncology, Early Online Publication, 21 December 2011.

The build-up of excessive fluid filled with cancer cells in the abdomen (known as malignant ascites) is a painful complication common in advanced ovarian cancer. The study, published Online First in the prestigious British journal The Lancet Oncology, shows the effectiveness of VEGF blockade in the reduction of malignant ascites, but confirms the significant clinical risk of fatal bowel perforation in this population of patients with very advanced cancer. “VEGF blockade should be used with caution in advanced ovarian cancer with abdominal carcinomatosis, and the benefit–risk balance should be thoroughly discussed for each patient,” the authors conclude. For more information, visit the website of  The Lancet Oncology.
