Montreal, September 14, 2022 – Six months after being placed on Newsweek magazine’s list of World’s Best Hospitals for 2022, the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) has distinguished itself again by being ranked by Newsweek among the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals for 2023.
Official recognition of the JGH’s achievement was announced by Newsweek and Statista Inc., a leading statistics portal and global provider of industry rankings. The lists are based on a global survey of more than 40,000 professionals, including physicians, healthcare experts and hospital managers.
Of the 11 medical fields in the survey, the JGH ranked 63rd in pulmonology (pneumology), 111th in orthopedics (orthopedic surgery), and 135th (cardiology, cardiovascular intensive care).
A congratulatory message from Newsweek to the JGH stated that the ranking “serves to reinforce your reputation as a hospital that is respected among your peers and valued by its patients.”

Newsweek’s annual ranking features the top 300 hospitals for cardiology and oncology, the top 200 for pediatrics, the top 150 for cardiac surgery and endocrinology, and the top 125 for neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, gastroenterology, pulmonology and urology.
The JGH, which opened in 1934, is the largest—and, in many respects, the focal point—of the roughly three dozen healthcare and social services facilities in CIUSSS West-Central Montreal.
As a McGill University teaching hospital, the JGH is also one of the province’s most sophisticated and busiest healthcare facilities and referral centres, with a major oncology centre (the Segal Cancer Centre) and one of the world’s leading research institutes (the Lady Davis Institute).
