Montreal, September 14, 2023 – Once again, the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) has been ranked by Newsweek magazine among the world’s best specialized hospitals, with three specialties making a return appearance, and a fourth named for the first time.
Of the 12 medical fields in the survey, the JGH ranked 120th of 300 in cardiology, 64th of 125 in pulmonology, and 106th of 125 in orthopedics—specialties that also made the grade last year. Urology debuted this year with a ranking of 110th of 125.
The results were announced by Newsweek and Statista Inc., a leading statistics portal and global provider of industry rankings. The lists in the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2024 are based on a global survey of tens of thousands of medical professionals, such as physicians, healthcare experts and hospital managers.
Included in the rankings are leading hospitals in various countries, including the United States, France, Israel, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, India, Brazil and Australia.

Dr. Rosenberg noted the pivotal position of the JGH within the CIUSSS, adding that its leading role as an innovator and a pace-setting university teaching hospital have been instrumental in ensuring that, first and foremost, the needs of patients take priority in the delivery of care.
This is bolstered by “Care Everywhere,” an all-encompassing approach whose goal—often enhanced by the use of digital technology—is to achieve the right outcomes by delivering the right care at the right time in the location that’s most appropriate, safest and most convenient for healthcare users.

Newsweek’s annual rankings feature the top 300 hospitals for cardiology and oncology; the top 250 for pediatrics; the top 150 for cardiac surgery, endocrinology and gastroenterology; the top 125 for neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology; and the top 100 for obstetrics and gynecology.
The JGH, which opened in 1934, is the largest—and, in many respects, the focal point—of the roughly three dozen healthcare and social services facilities in CIUSSS West-Central Montreal.
As a McGill University teaching hospital, the JGH is also one of the province’s most sophisticated and busiest healthcare facilities and referral centres, with a major oncology centre (the Segal Cancer Centre) and one of the world’s leading research institutes (the Lady Davis Institute).
