The Segal Cancer Centre Oncology Pharmacy Satellite is located on the 8th floor. It was established in January 1980 in the C pavilion and now has grown into its new quarters with a team of 7 pharmacists and 5 pharmacy technicians. All chemotherapy preparations and chemotherapy prescriptions are carefully monitored by our team of pharmacists to ensure that the optimal treatments are being prescribed for the specific cancer, with appropriate dosages, accurate schedule intervals and minimization of drug interactions. The team of pharmacists is always available for patient consultations and questions regarding their treatments and support medications. All chemotherapy preparations for the out-patient clinic, the hospitalized patients and the clinical trial patients are prepared in our sterile preparation room by 3 technicians, under the supervision of one of the pharmacists.
Currently there are about 200 ongoing clinical trials with new investigative drugs that are in different trial phases (Phases I to IV) and which are conducted by the Jewish General Hospital's Clinical Research Unit, the McGill Oncology Clinical Research Program, The National Cancer Institute of Canada and The National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel project (NSABP). The oncology pharmacy is also the distribution centre for investigational drugs for the McGill Clinical Research Program which, in addition to the Jewish General Hospital, also includes the Montreal General Hospital, the Royal Victoria Hospital, and St. Mary’s Hospital.
