Who We Are

Hope & Cope is a non-profit, professionally managed, volunteer-based organization that provides psychosocial support and practical resources free of charge to cancer patients, their caregivers and their families. We are the cancer survivorship program of the Jewish General Hospital’s Segal Cancer Centre, with a strong presence in the hospital’s outpatient cancer clinics and inpatient units. We offer a wide variety of wellness programs at the Hope & Cope Cancer Wellness Centre – a freestanding facility located just west of the hospital – and on line.

Mission – How We Help

Founded in 1981 by Sheila Kussner, O.C., O.Q., C.O.M., our mission is to help patients and their caregivers live well at every stage of cancer. Our goal is to help you regain a sense of control and well-being, reduce isolation, and restore hope.

Whether you are dealing with a new diagnosis, a recurrence or advanced cancer, we’ve got you covered with innovative, evidence-based programs offered in a warm, welcoming environment.

Our Services at a Glance

Our evidence-based programs are offered by cancer-experienced volunteers, supervised by professional staff. Our volunteers understand what you are going through because they have walked in your shoes.  We offer many opportunities for connection, learning and sharing.

Peer Support

  • One-to-one phone support – we will match you with a “buddy” who can answer your questions and offer a listening ear and reassurance as you cope with cancer.
  • Support groups – we offer a wide variety of support groups*
  • Clinic support (oncology, pulmonary and radiotherapy clinics), visiting hospitalized patients, and palliative care support (suspended during COVID-19)
  • Bereavement support*

Wellness Programs*

Our Wellness Centre is a peaceful oasis where you can focus on wellness instead of illness. Taught by highly trained volunteers who share their passion for wellness, our classes and activities are designed to help you live well with and after cancer.  Our volunteers will help you develop a wellness plan tailored specifically to your needs.

  • Cancer Exercise and Rehabilitation Program – group classes such as yoga, qi gong, tai chi and dance; personalized exercise programs that can be followed in our fully equipped gym or at home
  • Stress management – relaxation, visualization
  • Nutrition – cooking classes, information sessions led by oncology dietitians
  • Creative exploration – art, choir and more
