Document Delivery / Interlibrary Loan

NOTE: McGill affiliates are welcome to use our Interlibrary loan service, but can also use  McGill University ILL

What is Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan (ILL) ?

Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan is a fee-based service that obtains journal articles and books that are not available at the JGH Libraries.

Who can use this service ?

JGH staff, residents, and students on rotation (HSL registration required).

How much does it cost ?

  • Regular request: $3.00 + lending library fees*
  • Urgent request: $5.00 + lending library fees*

*The lending library fee can be from $0 to about $12 US maximum for an article (it may be a little more for a book).  We always try to keep your costs as low as possible by finding the lending institution that charges the least. To avoid administrative delays in the delivery of your ILL, choose your maximum desirable cost.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

How shall I pay the fee ?

By cash: payment must be made upon receipt of the item. For an article in PDF format, you will need to pay at the circulation desk before it can be sent to you.

By account number: we will send you an invoice to approve (or have approved by the authorized person) on an annual basis.

How long does it take ?

ILL: 2 to 7 workdays for a journal article; 1 to 3 weeks for a book; urgent requests will be filled within 1 workday.

How do I submit a request ?

You can submit your interlibrary loan requests electronically in two ways:

  1. Complete one of the following forms:
"Request a book ? ILL" if you are requesting a book or a book chapter.
"Request an article ? ILL" if you are requesting an article or conference presentation.
  2. While searching in one of the biomedical databases to which the JGH libraries subscribe, click on the link "Find it at JGH" near your desired item, if we do not pay for access to the full text, this link will take you to a partially pre-filled ILL form.

Please fill in your request form as completely as possible to speed up the process.

Before submitting a request, please check if your desired item is accessible through our subscriptions, is open access, or is part of our print or electronic book collection. However, if you submit a request that is accessible through library subscriptions, is open access, or is in our collections, we will not charge you a fee and will direct you to the item.

What are my responsibilities for book ILL's ?

You are responsible for books on loan until you return them to us.

Please return the material on time so as to keep our library in good standing with the lending library.

If you want to renew the book, please contact the ILL office before the due date. However, allowance of renewal is subject to the lending library’s policy.
