The Jewish General Hospital School of Nursing was established as part of the JGH Department of Nursing in 1951. As the first Jewish nursing school in Canada, it accepted students of all religions and ethnicities, representing various provinces of Canada and states of the United States. A nurses’ residence was built and dedicated also in 1951. The first class entered the nursing school in February 1951, with an additional group joining in September of that year. The first graduating class in 1954 was made up of 14 students, with the graduation ceremony presided over by Allan Bronfman, then president of the JGH. With the completion of their course work, most graduates of the nursing school began their nursing careers at the JGH. The School of Nursing consisted of a three year nursing programme, including the junior, intermediate, and senior terms. As of 1968 approximately sixty new students were accepted each year.

The JGH School of Nursing remained open from 1951-1972, after which the system for educating nurses in the province changed. Post 1972, all hospital based nursing schools in Quebec were closed and nursing education was undertaken by CEGEPs. The JGH would continue to host field work and practical experience for these nursing students. The last group of students from the School of Nursing graduated in June 1972, as the 19th graduating class.

The first Director of Nursing at the JGH, Miss Amy Mendels Shaer (1934-1949), laid the foundations for the creation of the nursing school. Subsequent directors were Evelyn Kessler (1949-1956), Norena S. Mackenzie (1956-1959), Joan M. Gilchrist (1960-1966) and Helen D. Taylor (1966-1974).Mary Barrett served as Director of Education in 1964. Other important figures include, Assistant Directors of Nursing Education Gwen Allen (1967-1969) and C. Sideco (1971).
