Taube Kaplan and her husband who was a Rabbi lived on Cadieux Street. She supplemented her husband's meagre income by teaching Hebrew and religion to boys. Although she came from a humble background she became one of the principle fundraisers and an indefategable force in the campaign to create jewish medical services in Montreal.
Taube Kaplan was a principal fundraiser in the campaign to establish the Herzl Dispensary. Later she perceived a large gap in services for poor jewish women and their babies. Through her tireless efforts and door to door campaigning she raised $7,000 dollars to establish the Hebrew Maternity Hospital. The hospital opened on November 19, 1916. The Hebrew Maternity Hospital and the Herzl Dispensary were both precursors to the Jewish Hospital established in 1934. Mrs. Kaplan later turned her sights to the Jewish Hospital and succeeded in becoming one of its leading fundraisers. Although she contributed greatly to all three institutions she consistently refused to be honoured, she turned down the position of president of the Ladies' Auxiliary, a position on the board of directors of the hospital, and the privilege of having the maternity ward named after her. She wanted to remain true to her humble roots. She died on August 11th, 1940.
