Jewish General Hospital Medical Library; Health Sciences Library

11.43 cm of textual and graphic material

The Jewish General Hospital, with the help of donations from its medical staff, had established a medical library soon after opening in 1936. However, the Library remained inadequate for several years on account of insufficient funds and staffing. In 1941 the Women's Auxiliary founded the Medical Library Committee which henceforth solicited donations for the Library, supplied volunteer librarians and annually voted $250 for maintenance. The Medical Library Committee continued to provide these much needed services until 1957, when the hospital hired its own librarians. After that, however, these women continued to make a yearly grant for the purchase of books.

The JGH Medical Library (now the Health Sciences Library) was established to meet the clinical, educational and research related needs of hospital personnel, allied health students on rotation, health professionals, medical and allied health students, and paramedical personnel in the Montreal health community. The Library includes the Drazin Memorial Library which was founded in 1986 consisting of a collection of books devoted to Judaica and Ethics. The Medical Library is also affiliated with the library at the Institute of Community and Family Psychiatry and is networked as part of McGill University’s libraries. It is a lending library providing reference, interlibrary loans, patient information and various information technology services. In 1975, the Medical Library underwent major renovations and again in 2007, major renovations allowed for the addition of two conference rooms, more study space and 15 public computers. In 2009 it absorbed the collection from the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research (LDI) Library, which closed. The Medical Library currently has four fulltime staff and four part time staff. In 2007 the JGH Archives were established as a department within the Medical Library.
