Amy Mendels was a native of Lanark, Ontario, and a graduate of the Ottawa Ladies' College. Early on in her career she worked at the Mount Sinai Hospital of New York. In 1933 she was appointed the first superintendent of Nurses at the Jewish General Hospital, a position which she would fill for 17 years until her retirement in 1950.
