LDI researchers evaluate effects of new anti-coagulants
For the first time since 1954 when warfarin emerged as the standard oral anti-coagulant prescribed to treat blood clots that form in the veins (also known as venous thrombosis), new drugs are coming onto the market. A group of researchers at the Lady Davis Institute of the Jewish General Hospital have published a meta-analysis of novel anti-coagulants tested in nine clinical trials, involving more than 16,600 patients, and concluded that two of the new entries on the market offer improvements over warfarin. Their findings appear in the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Atrium Café reopens at Jewish General Hospital
The Jewish General Hospital (JGH) today reopened the Atrium Café following a thorough investigation and cleaning, after the discovery of the norovirus infection lead to the restaurant’s temporary closure on November 1, 2012.

The JGH would again like to remind the public to practice proper hand hygiene. While hand washing may appear old-fashioned and low-tech, it nevertheless remains one of the fastest, cheapest and most effective ways of stopping infection in its tracks. If soap and water are not easily available, an alcohol-based hand-sanitizer is a suitable replacement.

Norovirus cases reported - Jewish General Hospital taking necessary steps to resolve situation
The Jewish General Hospital (JGH) has confirmed that there have been a number of cases of JGH staff experiencing stomach pain, cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and/or, in some cases, fever due to a norovirus infection.
 
The suspected cause of the virus is being investigated, and involves the hospital Atrium café’s in-house catering, which services staff only. As a result, the JGH immediately notified Montreal Public Health, and closed the Atrium, effective Thursday afternoon, November 1, and will remain so until further notice.

National network evaluating drug safety reports early results
Prescription medications remain one of the most common causes of severe adverse reactions in clinical medicine, accounting for thousands of deaths annually in Canada. The urgent need for rigorous, scientific drug safety research has been clearly understood for decades, but lacked national coordination until the arrival of the Canadian Network for Observational Drug Effect Studies (CNODES), which today released its first report documenting progress towards its goal of creating a fully operational system for rapid assessment of adverse drug effects in Canada. Studies performed in the first year of operation have examined the effects of cholesterol lowering drugs on the kidney, whether gastric acid inhibiting drugs increase the risk of pneumonia, and whether drugs used to treat psychosis (eg schizophrenia) cause acute onset of diabetes. Cancer patients in denial make life difficult for family caregivers
Denial is a common coping strategy for patients with advanced cancer, who are unable to come terms with their progressive decline. In a unique study published in Palliative and Supportive Care, Naomi Kogan, an oncology social worker at the Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital, and colleagues examined how denial increases the burden on the family caregivers of those patients.

The Jewish General Hospital (JGH) is inviting women to take advantage of an appointment-free, public, cervical cancer screening clinic offered as part of the National Cervical Cancer Awareness Week (October 21-27). To contribute to the health of Canadian woman, the JGH participates in raising awareness about vaccination and providing free testing for women between 21-65 years of age.

Work on Légaré Street in September

TO ALL JGH PATIENTS AND VISITORS

As of the beginning of September, the City of Montreal will begin work on Légaré Street.

Over the course of the next two months, the City will repave Légaré Street between Linton and Côte Sainte-Catherine Road. Additionally, new street lights and sidewalks will be installed. The work will begin near Linton and will finish with the portion in front of Pavilion E.

Work on Légaré Street in front of the JGH should begin in October. During this section of the work, the drop-off zone in front of Pavilion E will not be accessible by car.

Instead, a temporary drop-off zone will be available on Côte Sainte-Catherine Road in front of the Emergency Department entrance. A security guard will be on hand at all times to ensure the flow of traffic.

Signage will be posted indicating the temporary drop-off zone.

The Légaré Street entrance will remain open at all times.[Read more]

Connecting Côte Saint-Luc to the hospital district
The City of Côte Saint-Luc and the Jewish General Hospital, in collaboration with Mobiligo and the Centre de gestion des déplacements de developpement économique Saint-Laurent (CGD DESTL) will announce on September 20 at a news conference a project to improve commuting to medical facilities in the Côte-des-Neiges district for the residents, workers and users. The goal of the project is to encourage single occupancy vehicle users to shift to environmentally-friendly transport practices, such as public transit, carpooling, walking and biking.

'Doctors on Wheels' mobile health care unit launched in Quebec today!
Kia Canada Québec dealers have partnered with the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) and McGill University in support of the “Doctors on Wheels” Lab program. Two 2013 Kia Sorento Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) will be provided to Dr. Amir Raz, and his colleague, Dr. Cory Harris, to travel into urban centres as well as remote areas and engage in community outreach activities, including education, medical and psychosocial research, and health-centered initiatives.

National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
More than 2600 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year in Canada, and 1,750 of those succumb to the disease. However, if detected early, the survival rate can jump to 90 per cent. Unlike breast and cervical cancer, there is no early detection test for ovarian cancer. While efforts are underway to discover a method of early detection, doctors press that awareness of the symptoms and risk factors for ovarian cancer is critically important.

Diabetes drug linked to increased risk of bladder cancer
Pioglitazone, a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes, is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer, according to findings from a study conducted by researchers from the Lady Davis Institute at the Jewish General Hospital, published in the British Medical Journal. The Jewish General Hospital (JGH) today announced the official opening of the Peter Brojde Lung Cancer Centre (Brojde Centre) at the Segal Cancer Centre.

While certain services of the Brojde Centre have long been available to patients through the Pulmonary Oncology Department of the JGH, this new, state-of-the-art facility provides a permanent home for the Pulmonary Oncology program’s dedicated and multi-disciplinary team of healthcare experts. Discovery of new genetic markers opens novel pathways to treating osteoporosis
Led by a team of investigators, including Dr. Brent Richards from the Lady Davis Institute at the Jewish General Hospital, the largest genome-wide meta-analysis ever conducted into bone mineral density (BMD) has uncovered 56 genetic pathways – 32 of which are novel – associated with the architecture and physiology of bone density. BMD is the most important predictor of an individual’s risk for fractures.Sufferers of osteoporosis, a disease characterized by low bone mass and the progressive deterioration of bone tissue, could benefit from the promise this discovery holds for identifying new and more effective drug targets. The results of the study appear in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics, online April 15, 2012 and in the June 2012 print edition.

Older anesthesiologists more likely to face litigation
While stressing that cases are few and far between, a study of malpractice litigation against anesthesiologists in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia over a ten-year period (1993-2002) revealed that those over the age of 65 were one-and-a-half times more likely to be sued by patients than their younger colleagues. Moreover, the degree of injury at issue was likely to be of greater severity. The study is being published in the March 2012 issue of Anesthesiology.

Jewish General Hospital supports National Suicide Prevention Week

Recent data demonstrates there are 1,100 cases of suicides in Quebec annually, an average of three per day. The Jewish General Hospital (JGH) wishes to reiterate the importance of preventing depression, the main risk factor for suicide, and to inform the public of the existence and availability of several sources of help in fighting suicide, as part of of the 22nd Suicide Prevention Week, February 5 to the 11.

JGH is first in Canada to use surgical robot for complex removal of pancreatic tumour
The Jewish General Hospital (JGH) has become the first hospital in Canada to perform robot-assisted surgery to complete an extremely complex operation known as the Whipple Procedure. In this procedure, a pancreatic tumour is removed by having the robot gain access to the tumour through a series of small punctures. Gone is the need for large incisions in the abdominal wall.

JGH and CSSS Cavendish partner up to improve care to patients
Taking blood tests or other similar tests just got easier for patients who live around the Cavendish Mall. If they choose, the residents of Côte Saint-Luc, Hampstead, NDG, Snowdon-West and Montreal-West can now go to the CSSS Cavendish - CLSC René-Cassin Test Centre at the mall instead of making a longer trip and possibly spending more time waiting to be seen at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) Test Centre. Through an agreement by both healthcare institutions, the service offered by the CSSS Cavendish to the population does shorten wait times and improve the quality of care.

A Canadian pioneer in public health care has reached a milestone anniversary -The Goldman Herzl Family Practice Centre is celebrating its centennial as one of the country’s first public clinics to offer medical care at no cost to those in need. Although the Centre pre-dates the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) which opened in 1934, it merged with the hospital’s Department of Family Medicine in 1974.
