Music is Healing
Jazz Festival Returns to Jewish General Hospital

Music will take centre stage as the Jewish General Hospital’s celebrates its 13th annual JGHJAZZ Festival from June 26-July 6.  Hospital patients, their families, visitors, staff, and members of the community will be treated to daily musical performances beginning at noon, at the hospital’s Côte des Neiges entrance.

“This year’s musical artists celebrate the idea that art, especially improvised music, plays a major healing role in all societies and cultures,” explains Bryan Highbloom, festival organizer and JGH Musical Therapist. “Music shares the compassion, openness, diversity, discipline and rigor necessary to help people in a life that is in unceasing transition”.

This year’s celebration aims to prove that making music – the action of creating melodious sound – can act as a porweful healing tool. The aim each year is to help improve the quality of life for patients with all kinds of illnesses and disabilities, says Mr. Highbloom. “The music played by the musicians comes from the desire to do good, and the environment is meant to put everyone at ease.”

To celebrate this thirteenth edition, featured performers Jazz Nouveau Libre du Québec, Stephen Barry Blues Band, Madou Diarra and Dakan, and Linda Morrison among others, will grace the JGH Jazz stage to bring great summer entertainment, as well as an emotional and spiritual uplift to patients, staff, volunteers, and the public.

In case of rain, the musicians will perform indoors, in the hospital’s main lobby (Côte Sainte Catherine Rd. entrance). As Mr. Highbloom notes, “Music is an important element in the overall treatment plan for our patients.” All performances will also be streamed live to patients via the closed-circuit TV channel provided to JGHJAZZ by Hopitel.
