Recent
data demonstrates there are 1,100 cases of suicides in Quebec
annually, an average of three per day. The Jewish General Hospital
(JGH) wishes to reiterate the importance of preventing depression,
the main risk factor for suicide, and to inform the public of the
existence and availability of several sources of help in fighting
suicide, as part of of the 22nd
Suicide Prevention Week, February
5 to the 11.
Dr.
Mark Adams, Staff Psychiatrist at the JGH, explains why it is crucial
to encourage people in distress to seek help and to support and
empower the families of these individuals to contribute to
prevention.
Suicide
Prevention Week, supported by the Mental Illness Association and the
Association québecoise de prévention du suicide, stresses the
message that suicide is preventable, and emphasizes the role that all
individuals play in building a society without suicide. If anyone is
in need of help, the 1-866-APPELLE (1-866-277-3553) intervention
hotline is recommended, which is free and available 24 hours a day, 7
days a week.
