Overview
Occupational Therapists (OTs) are healthcare professionals who help individuals challenged by accident, handicap or disease. These challenges can significantly impact a person’s ability to lead productive and autonomous lives. When independent living is compromised, the OT plays a major role in helping patients overcome these limitations.

Assessment and treatment in the following areas:
  • ADLs (Activities of Daily Living)
  • Discharge planning
  • Assessment of ability to return home
  • Recommendations to ensure safety 
  • Driving screening 
  • Energy conservation/Work simplification 
  • Ergonomics 
  • Workstation evaluation and recommendations 
  • Recommendations for proper body mechanics to prevent repetitive strain injuries 
  • Hand rehabilitation: assessment and treatment after upper-extremity injury 
  • Joint protection: principles and techniques 
  • Orthopedic pre-op teaching: teaching session prior to arthroplasty (hip/knee) for instruction in ADL/IADL with respect to post-operative restrictions
  • Perception/Cognition: patient and family/caregiver education 
  • Splinting: fabrication of custom made splints when required
