Hand Hygiene

Patient safety is a major priority at the Jewish General Hospital. Integral to patient safety is the reduction of the incidence of hospital acquired infections. The department of Nursing in partnership with the Infection Control Committee have proudly lead the entire hospital into formally joining the initiative of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute on hand hygiene and are launching a formal hand hygiene program.

One in nine patients admitted to Canadian hospitals acquire an infection as a result of their hospital stay. It has been identified that the transmission of microorganisms from the hands of health care providers is the main source of cross infection in hospitals and can be prevented by hand hygiene practices that are in keeping with recommended standards.

The Jewish General Hospital hand hygiene program is an initiative that will contribute to patient safety by demonstrating to staff, patients and families when and how hand hygiene can best be performed.
