Overview
Endocrinology is a subspecialty of medicine that deals more with patients’ quality of life than with life-and-death issues. Not too many years ago, diabetic patients had a short life span and a very poor quality of life. Today, the life expectancy and quality of life of diabetic patients have substantially increased, as they have for patients with diseases of other endocrine glands, such as the thyroid, pituitary or adrenal glands, as well as for those with thyroid cancer and other endocrine tumours. In addition, our research and clinical efforts are leading to preventive interventions, another concept that must be better understood and appreciated by governments and donors alike.
