| Couple and Family Therapy Training Program |
Welcome to the Couple and Family Therapy Training Program
Department of Psychiatry- Jewish General Hospital
Dr. Sharon Bond
The Couple and Family Therapy Training Program at the Jewish General Hospital is a well-reputed program with an established 40 year history. The first family therapy training program in Canada, for many years this program has served to advance expertise in family therapy for a wide range of human service professions. Many of the early pioneers in the family therapy field conducted their early family therapy research through the Department of Psychiatry, Jewish General Hospital: Dr. Nathan Epstein, Dr. Herta Guttman and Dr. Leo Chagoya developed the Family Category Schema, one of the early family process research measures. Most of the faculty at the Couple and Family Therapy Program have university appointments in psychiatry, social work and psychology and are established family therapy supervisors offering training to the larger Quebec community for several generations.
This three year Couple and Family Therapy Program is designed for mental health and health professionals who wish to acquire practical and theoretical training in family and couple therapy. The program is offered to social workers, psychologists, nurses, counsellors, physicians and other health care workers. This program offers two training tracks. The Track I Post-Graduate Certificate Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). Graduates of the Certificate Programme are eligible to obtain their permit as a “couple and family therapist” through the Ordre professionnel des travailleurs sociaux du Québec (OPTSQ). The Track II Continuing Education Program is designed for professional development and does not lead to professional certification through the AAMFT or the OPTSQ.
This program provides unique opportunities for professional development. Housed within the Institute of Community and Family Psychiatry, trainees in this program have access to a fully equipped library facility with a wide selection of journals, periodicals and assistance from our resident librarian. The program is connected to the Couple and Family Service, a treatment facility for couple and families in distress which serves as a training site for students in the program. Opportunities are provided for clinical research and consultation from leading experts in the field. The training site at the Institute of Community and Family Psychiatry provides expert audio-visual support through the availability of one-way mirror facilities, a newly renovated studio enabling clinicians-in-training to record their ongoing clinical sessions and an expert audio-visual consultant. Training with the Couple and Family Program introduces students to that latest training, research and practice material in the field. |
