JGH History: 1940s

1940
  • The Women's Auxiliary establishes additional volunteer committees to handle activities such as buying books for the Medical Library and recruiting volunteers during the labour-scarce years of World War II.
1946
  • After World War II, large numbers of Jewish refugees arrive in Montreal, including many former concentration camp inmates for whom even a routine medical examination can be confusing and terrifying. In response, the Women's Auxiliary establishes the Medical Social Service to provide newcomers with translators, counselling, emotional support and financial aid.
