JGH History: 1920s

1920
  • Directors of the Hebrew Maternity Hospital create a Women's Auxiliary, upon which the JGH Auxiliary is later modelled.
1927
  • After a meeting in January of Montreal's Jewish leaders, a mass meeting of the Jewish community is held in May to agree that a need exists for a Jewish hospital.
1929
  • As the need for a new hospital becomes critical, a mass meeting of more than 3,000 people is held on Sept. 22 at the Mount Royal Hotel. A $1 million campaign is inaugurated by Montreal’s Jewish community to collect financial pledges and to proceed with plans to build the hospital.
  • In October, the stock market crashes, triggering the great Depression of the 1930s. Nevertheless, dedicated supporters of the hospital – many of whom are in dire financial straits – honour their pledges by making payments throughout the '30s and '40s.
